Is there ANY way to play this blasted game?

I have the looting bug. When I install the 3rd patch I get a black screen, then it sends me back to desktop without any messages. And no, I dont want to install Co8 or anything else that adds fan-made content.
Question: Is it actually possible to, you know, play this game, the game that I bought? I have searched through different forums, googled, EVERYTHING, and there is simply no answer to how to to get the game running with the 3rd patch.
Please help.
Also, thanks very much for the Co8 guys who force us to use their content only if we want the stupid looting bug eliminated. Really great guys *glares*.

Take it easy man, a lot of people seem to enjoy the Co8 mod and adding more features to it is no reason to complain about it, especially since it's your problem that you don't want the other stuff in the mod, not theirs.
Oh, and I googled "temple of elemental evil patches" and found this for ya-
Sorcerer's Place - The Temple of Elemental Evil Official Patches & Miscellanea
Scroll down and you'll see an "Unofficial" patch that's mainly for bug fixing, namely the looting one. Hopefully this is compatible for ya (I've never really played too much of this game, didn't like it, so I don't know much about it.)

Yes, thank you. I just searched a bit more and saw that somebody else recommended this. However, I only took temple.dll from the zip file and Im wondering if by replacing it added new content?

Ehh, like I said, I don't really play ToEE, so I wouldn't know. But I'm sure someone else knows the answer.

Lord Plothos should be able to help.
He knows this game inside and out.
Try to hang in there and wait for him.

I'm not sure where you took the .dll from, but I think you generally need to do more than just replace the .dll. For instance, with the temple.zip fix, you must add rules for the magic missile spell, etc. This is because the .dll file references other files, and sometimes files that don't exist in the normal game.
That said, I believe there is a solution to your problem, which has been experienced by others after patching. I'll PM you with the details.

I've got the same problem. Every time I try and run ToEE after I install patch 3 the screen switches to black and then switches back to the desktop.
I've downloaded the unofficial file from Sorcerer's Place and figured out how to access the ReadMe file, but it only mentions the dll file. What do I do with the rest of the files?
I dropped the contents of the 'data' file into the ToEE data file in the ToEE directory on my C: drive, but I'm not sure if that was the right thing to do. Also, what am I supposed to do with the notepad textfiles?
Did I put the data files in the right place? What should I do with the textfiles?

I'm having the same problem. I've got the original boxed version i'm trying to revisit on a Vista system. I've installed all of the patches and mods, but still can't seem to get this to work. Please help!

There are a bunch of vista issues. I don't think I'm qualified to help there, as I haven't even seen Vista. The guys at co8 have at least one thread devoted to this.

I think I need this advice too!
I placed Mobeius' Temple.dll in the Directory successfully, but now casting Magic Missile as a 6th level Sorceror makes the game 'stick' (the Sorceror can't finish his turn.)
So what else do I need to do?

The zip comes with other files besides the .dll. If I recall, there should be a folder called "data" in there as well. There is also a data folder in your main ToEE directory. Take the contents of the data folder in the zip and put it into the data folder in your game directory. These files are referenced by the new .dll file and the game messes up if they aren't there.

I do appreciate your help, but it's still not working.
1. I copied the other files that came with temple.dll into the same ToEE directory that I put temple.dll in. No joy.
2. Next there is a ToEE folder called 'data', so I copied the extra files in there too.
Sadly the game still sticks...

They definitely need to go into the "data" folder. You might have to restart your campaign, but I'm not sure.

You might well be right about restarting, because my failed game used a bunch of starting characters generated before I installed the temple.dll extension.
So I've created new characters with temple.dll installed and they are certainly using the extension (e.g. the Sorceror gets 1 magic missile per level).
So it's fingers crossed that all will go well when the Sorceror reaches 6th level - as that's where the previous game 'halted'.
