Neither, I say! A stout staff serves my hands better than any other weapon, as it could for any man. Of course, that is my taste, and you yourself have to decide what "your taste" is. Two weapons provide more attack and damage potential, but a shield certainly comes in handy when you find a fistful of knaves coming straight for you. I believe this is a choice you must make on your own. What did your warrior friend, the one who trained you, wield? Perhaps you might serve to honor his memory by taking up his preference of weapons.

if you a dwarf you should be waraxe/waraxe (cause only dwarfs can carry those in 1 hand and they do 1d10+str bonus!!!

) if elf go for dual longswords or go for a great waraxe for ultra coolness (great waraxe=bigest axe in the game

)

I personnaly prefer the finese and skill involved in the Scimitar. Dual wielding those suckers is truly a difficult task to perform, so you will expect your leader to be full of finese, brim, and vinigar. Mostly Vinigar!

Go practice a little with your brothers-in-arms over at the Nature Wing. Once you've walked a proverbial mile in their shoes, you'll be much better suited to deal righteous dual damage.
In other words: get a level of Ranger.

The only reason I intend to dual wield, is because I don't intend to let anyone live long enough to strike at me!

I may not be in the Fighter's Wing, but perhaps my opinion may serve you.
Barbarians, at level 1, get 2 more Hit Points, slightly faster movement (which might not be implemented in NWN for party balance) and, probably most importantly, the ability to Rage. And you are illiterate, of course.
"Dualling" to Fighter at a later point has no real disadvantages, since Fighters have no special high level abilities (just more of the same).
In other words: go for it.
