Caster Level and item creation

I'm running a sorcerer who has taken the Craft Wondrous Items feat. He's still low level (6th?) but I now have the option of making him a Red Dragon Disciple. If I do that, will his caster level stay at 6th level, or will his caster level continue to increase as a Red Dragon Disciple? I'd be bummed if my Red Dragon Disciple couldn't make any cool items.
In short, my question is: Is caster level determined by the character's total level, or only by levels in classes that can cast spells?
