Patch Downloads

Can someone explain the various patches available for Baldurs Gate in the download section? Last week, I posted a problem I'm having in level 3 of the chessboard and level 4 of Durlags Tower. No one replied, so I'm exploring the download section. One is obviously marked for a US download, but does not explain what it is suppose to correct. I have left the tower to explore the warewolf island, but when I turned over the sea charts in Ulgoths Beard, the main character never came back with the copies and I could not get on the ship at the dock. After all the time I put into this game, I sure would like to save what I have accomplished.
