Game crashes on exiting

I did a search but I didn't manage to find anything. I bought Oblivion GOTY for the PC two weeks ago and It's a nice game. I prefer Morrowind but installing OOO raised the standards a bit.
GOTY comes with the latest patch but I've checked to see if there's anything later anyway. Whenever I close the game from the main menu or esc menu the screen goes black and I get a message saying oblivion needs to close. I click don't send by alt tabbing into the box and nothing is wrong. To be honest I don't mind doing this when quitting the game but it means my graphics settings aren't saved, meaning I have to reset them every time I open the game. The ones that really help my performance can be changed in game only.
So are there any fixes?
Thanks
Ml

I had the same problem on my old PC not long before switching to the new one. I came to the conclusion it was related to how the game clears virtual memory on closing. I never found a solution to it, even defragging the HDD didn't sort it, although the drive was still fragmented pretty badly after DFing it because I'd installed and un-installed so many programes. Try defragging is all I can suggest, if anyone can offer a solution I'd be interested in reading it.

When I ran OB on Win XP, I would "crash" on exit about 50% of the time. With OB on Vista, I "crash" on exit 90% of the time. From what I read on the forums, this is a common bug with no fix at this time and the frequency of the crashes varies from system-to-system.
However, this is the first I have heard that graphic settings would not be retained.

Had this problem several times actually both with the installation of Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul and the install of "The Lost Spires" mod.
Go into oblivion, make all your new graphical changes and setting modifications, then hit the console button (~ if it's the american keyboard, I forget what it is for the european version, but it's easily searchable). Type in simple "saveini" without quotes. It'll fix it for you that way.
This is an unfortunate problem with many graphical mods in oblivion, especially the massive ones like OOO and Lost Spires that add completely new graphics and textures to the game. It's not a bug as it cannot be fixed, but at least it's only a minor annoyance if you know the right commandline codes.

Thanks all. I was going to get around to defragging. I'll let you know if that works.

Defragging won't do anything for that. Defragging isn't a graphical fix of any kind. It's literally just reorganizing files on the magnetic plate of your hard drive, it doesn't even do anything in windows or DOS or something.
