Korgan's quest: timed?

In all my run-throughs, I never actually got a message from Korgan informing me that it was time to do his quest, or to let him go so that he might continue alone. So I was startled when one showed up. Is his quest timed? Or is he just trying to appeal to my party's sympathies, and get us closer to his fancied reward?

It is timed.

I have got in several occasions message that I must continue his quest, or he will leave the party. And I recall once he actually did.

Bah. Damned dwarf. I should have known better! And it's very early in the game: no major quests completed, not even Nalia's, not even the circus tent! This will be interesting to see. :) Thanks!

Actually, all of the NPCs quests are timed. If you delay them too long, the NPC will leave. I think the turning point is 10 BG2 days after you've received the first message of the quest(for instance, Nalia receives message about her father's funeral).

Korgan's quest is slightly different. Korgan may or may not leave, but if you delay too much, then his buddies will escape with the Book. This is actually the only quest that is timed before Ust-Natha quests(where they all are timed).

If all, some are remarkably generous. I didn't do Edwin's quest in my last couple of run-throughs for quite a long time, and he never complained.

If you drop Korgan off after he's complained about his quest being ignored, take care of other matters and then return, will he refuse to rejoin? Or will his timer start back up where it left off?

Don't know, yet I think that no. IMHO this will happen:

A quest triggers after you start it. If you drop an NPC during an unfulfilled quest you will not find it anymore. For instance, if you start Jaheira's quest and defeat Galvarey, if you afterwards decide to drop her, she disappears forever in SoA.

I once took Cernd in Trademeet, then disbanded him. Went away for 20 or more days on other quests. When i returned, he was at the grove and I rejoined him, only to see immediately after that five or more disapproved remarks from him, after which he immediately separated. I wasn't even able to make the short trip to Faldorn with him!

My guess is that Korgan will never be seen again in SoA(in your current game), but there is still a good chance to be summoned and joined in ToB.

Then that's very much in the manner of BG1: the timer starts as soon as the NPC is added. I remember dropping Minsc when he started getting ansy about the time it was taking to rescue Dynaheir. I then rescued her--some time later--and came back to add him to the party. As soon as I did, and despite Dynaheir's presence, he attacked.
