Is pickpocketing the thief's skill that determines success/failure at shoplifting, or is it something else? Thanks. :)

It's the pickpocketing skill.

Did you need more information than that? (A message I wrote last year summarizes everything I know about this subject.)

Also, from my personal experience, a skill 135% (as tested on a bard), is enough to shoplift Lazarus 99% of the time. I assume that the difficulty in SoA is less.

If you're talking about Lazarus Librarus, the scroll merchant in Saradush, his steal difficulty is 95% (which is 33% less than Bernard's at the Copper Coronet).

As far as I remember, a skill of 200% is enough to rob every single merchant in SoA and ToB, except Bernard. For him you need 235%. Don't make your skill higher than 250%, because it wraps around and scores automatic failure.

Pickpocketing items from people is however not as guaranteed. There is always a minor chance that a pickpocket attempt will fail, no matter what the value of PickPocketing. So, I'd say, rob only those that you must - like Ribald, Prince Vilynaty, the genie in Trademeet and several more...

Don't forget that potions stack, and if you don't wanna use it - try combining Gloves of PickPocketing+Potion of Mind Focusing+Potion of Master Thievery+Potion of Perception. This will add additional 95% Thieving skill.

LOL! All I wanted to know was whether the pickpocketing skill was used for shoplifting, having forgotten that tidbit. The rest I've known for years--guys, don't teach my hamster to suck eggs! ;)

Thanks for the replies, though. :)
