I'm not used to a game where you don't make a whole party. How many characters should I make and how many slots should I leave for npc's. I like paladins will a paladin cause problems with other npc's because of the lawful good alignemnt?

When you play Baldur's Gate on single player, you make only the main character, the rest of the slots are filled by the NPCs, should you decide to let them join. There are many NPCs and to get them all you'll have to replay the game as there are unique quests and banters that occur depending on the time, place and hwat characters are in your group.

No, conflicting alignments will not cause problems, although, as a paladin, should your reputation drop below a certain point. or if you kill an innocent, you become a fallen paladin.
