How can you start a game and make more than one character in your party. Can you only play with one character?

First of all you have to play the game in multiplayer mode.
If this is your first multiplayer game, you will have to choose new game rather than open game.
As you go through the menus you will come to a point where you have various options, serial being one of them. Choose serial.
You will come to a menu where you have to type in a couple of IDs. Choose a short one that you can remember. They can both be the same. You will need them again. You will finally come to a menu where you create characters. These can be imported from your character file or created from scratch.
You can add or delete characters all the way through the game though if you do so, you are throwing away experience.
You can add other characters that you meet during the game and most find that the most interesting option, but there is no reason why you cannot create all six of your party members yourself.

there can be only one?

when i start the game and select multi-player my next options are Connect, Back or Pregenerate. It does not give me the option of starting a new game. what sould I do if I would like to create more than one character in my party?

you are not very patient, are you?

if you were, you would have pressed 'connect' to see what happened - you can 'connect' to a new game or later on to your saved game.

the first character is the one treated as bhaalspawn and the 'main' character, so that one has to stay so choose well.

I am running a game with
the PC - a multiclass M/T
a stalker I created
a wild mage and
a kensai/thief

I also have Jaheira in the party and just rescued Imoen (who I will drop)

doing that gives you a chance to check out new builds - last time I tried a great beserker specialising in halberd - vorpal hits aplenty with an Avenger druid and an assassin.

And in case you didn't know, moving the save file from "mpsave" to "save" in your Bladur's Gate directory lets you play the game with your characters as if you're playing Single-Player. That means instant loads and no space bar delay. ;)
