I just finished the game today and would have to say it was great, I would rank it up there with BG 1& 2 plus both expansions and IWD with expansions, as far as how much i enjoyed the game. I realy liked the turn base style of combat the end battle was good, the quests were good, IMO i just think the game game as a whole was very good and i enjoyed every second of playing time i invested into this game. :D

are we playing the same game? it is not bad but it does not rank anywhere near the bg/iwd series. i have been trying to give it a fair shake but i find myself having trouble playing it for periods of an hour or more.
*i find it to be boring (major dungeon crawl) one just wanders around and kills undead
*there is no connection with the character that one creates
*there is no interactions between the characters
*total lack of quests and interaction with npc's
*i grew up with 2nd ed. rules and find that i really don't care for the 3ed. rules.
*i think that there are many other issues with the game (another words i find myself quite disappointed with something that was supposed to be released a year ago).

i find that i may not finish this game and i definately will not replay it if i do finish it (who wants to go through those dungeons again).

sorry if i sound negative it is just that i was really looking forward to this game. i am thinking of replaying icewind dale (kind of a dungeon crawl but not nearly as bad).

and by the way i have had no problems with por and my system.

I think what Jim's describing is the difference between a CRPG and a dungeon crawl. This is why I have a problem with comparisons between BG2 and RoMD: the two games are really in totally different genres. If I were to compare RoMD to anything, it would be the Might and Magic series. And I'd probably prefer Might and Magic III through VI (so V and VI went on too long at the end with rote activities), given their sheer color and variety. Just my POV.

I'm sure I would have finished the game by now as well, except for two things:
1. Lack of time due to college
and 2. The fact that the POS freezes on me every time I get into a moderately difficult battle, forcing me to restart my computer. Three weeks and I'm still in the dwarven dungeons thanks to #2.

After it froze on me for the third time today I got fed up, uninstalled it, and tossed the whole shibang into the trash. RoMD can entertain the rats in the landfill from now on. Next time I'm readin' the reviews first.

Must agree... expected an hack-em and slash-em, listened to the developer's interviews, knew what to look for and got it. Yes, I wanted a plot, no, I didn't expect one. Yes, wanted more interactive npc's, no, didn't expect them.

For what it is, a dungeon crawl, and a pretty one at that, I give it a 7.5 on the "I am a dungeon crawl with pretty graphics" scale.

In addition, the combat system, though unwieldy at times, is engaging and exciting at the best of times, engaging and a tad repetitious at the worst. Always engaging.

The difficult battles in this game, requiring actual forethought and strategy, by themselves make the game worthwhile.

BG 1 & 2 could have stood a more in-depth combat system, rules notwithstanding. (I did, in fact, enjoy them more, but, again, comparing these games is like apples and oranges. Both fruit, tastey for different reasons.)
This is my opinion, a silly statement but necessary on these board where opinions are rampant and restraint is an endangered species...

I welcome rebuttals and ignore flames with poor grammar.

It's really a matter of the type of RPG you enjoy. I played all the Gold Box series and the ones before that and they were my absolute favorite games, because I like mindless hack and slash with a few puzzles now and then. As mentioned, this game compares much more to Might & Magic. If you like more puzzles and NPC interaction, such as that irritating little brat following you all over town with the "Hey ya", then BG is more your cup of tea.

haven't played it much, just 3 days and the thing decided to corrupt my save files. sigh. that really dropped the rating. and i was starting to like the dungeon crawl part, really reminds me of the old Pool of Radiance to the Pools of Darkness series.

yeah, 3rd ed rules seems kinda weird, but more realistic i guess, except that ubi shouldn't have inserted a non-finalised version, and left so many things out and tweaked so many things. kinda pointless to implement skills and feats when u can't choose them. and i really hated it when i discovered i can't choose my favored enemies for my ranger character. makes it so hard to relate to my character. and i abhorred the miniatures, so limited. oh well, but at least the gameplay was acceptable and the graphics were good.
