sorry for bothering you again.

i am attemoting a re-install of BG2, but my PC seems to think that it is already installed. The launcher comes up with 'play' where 'install' should be, and manually using the setup.exe brings up the uninstaller rather than the installer, even though there is nothing to uninstall.

can anyone suggest a solution to this problem?

Your registry still thinks the game is installed. Go onto Bioware's website, there's a section in the troubleshooting for the game that tells you how to completely manually uninstall the game, including all the registry keys. Follow their instructions, and then you'll be able to re-install.

If they can't help, come back, and we'll try to walk you through it. Must of us have faced the same problem, before.
