Need help with char, fill me in with the info i lack :S

Ok, so I've bought Morrowind, but didn't get the manual, so first I'd like to ask some basic questions:
1. Is there any combatbonuses by being in stealth/invis/unseen? Any nice backstabb-multipliers in true Baldur's Gate-spirit? And isn't sneak kinda unnecessary when you have Illusion?
2. What's the drawbacks from wearing Heavy Armor? (apart from its weight, I'm not that stupid ^_*, and more rapid fatigue consumation) Common sense tells me stealth-based skills should suffer, but do they? And what about magics?
3. Other then for roleplaying, is there a purpose to chose Short Blade over Long Blade? If I were a thief I would get the Short Blade too, but does it give me any bonuses in-game?
