Hmm...Shield of Balduran should do nicely, spell immunity: Necromancy, or waiting till chap 6, for Cloak of Mirorring...

Same way you kill beholders. If you have an thief, then your hide in shadows ability can be useful to scout the area. Your mage can then cast area effect spells like deathspell, ice storm and so on.

Summoned monsters work great too with combination of your fighters. Send in the animals and have your fighters storm in as they're distracted.

I'd suggest the magic tactic first though, since Beholders and Gauths can be pretty heavy on the damage they dish out.

Good luck! Image

Rapier is right - Shield of Balduran is easiest, and you can get it early in the game too (if you have the bonus merchants) Image

It makes Beholders almost too easy, they petriefie themselves in secs, and you just have to hit them once, same thing with Cloak o Mirroring...

The only one's to watch out for if you use the Shield of Balduran is the Elder one's they cast imprisonment(I believe this is what it is called)

One of my gripes the first time through was that I thought the beholders were way too damn easy to kill, even the elder orbs...and that's without either the shield of balduran or the cloak of mirrors. Whenever I met one, I just sent everyone in guns-a-blazin' but had my two mages both hit him with double magic-missles set up through minor spell sequencers. MM only does about 3 damage on average, but that's six missles for a level 12 caster x2 for 2 casters x2 for the sequencer--a total of 72 average damage. That's a lotta hurt laid down really fast. A couple more hits by your melee folks and you got yourself one dead beholder.

After a Chaos spell Gauths get confused and very easy to kill.

Just use a thief to scout out a little and find the nasties and use the spell holy Smite. With this spell you can cast it and they will not come running. Wear then down to near death. Then use something like fireball. This is what I did takes a long time but what can you do if you go there being low level. Now I have the cloak just need to stand there they kill them self. So much for a smart creature.

Well, if you don't have the luxury of those items.
you can try my way.

i summoned animals/monsters. put them in front of you, and have yoshimo scout the area a bit. then let it agro to gauths.

and have your party ready with range attack.

works well for me. GL

My tactic is simply this: if you encounter one beholder, just put every melee character beating it, those guys drop in no time. But if you encounter more like in the beholder dungeon (underdark)(You need aerie and Imoen + haste) find out where the beholder's are, go almost to a visual range and shoot simultaneuosly two fireballs, they don't die but if you're fast you can back away and do it again, and after 4 fireballs they're pretty cooked up, just finish them with MM and with your fighters.

Gauths basically use two types of offensive spells: cause serious wounds and lightning. Use protection from lightning and magic immunity: necromancy on a fast, hard hitting character, buff him up and haste him, and send him in. Won't take long.

Try softening up clumps of gauths using fireball, area effect spells, or sending waves of summoned skeletons/monsters. Haste the creatures you summon; that helps a ton as well.

The free action spell helps stop paralysis. Just make sure you put that on someone AFTER you haste them, or the haste won't take effect.

I've also found that gauths are quite susceptible to the "hold monster" spell, since it has an area effect.

Also, a spell sequencer loaded with three Flame Arrow Spells is absolutely devastating! Image

It's one of my favourites! Image

or a sequencer with skull trap (doesn't have a damage max like FBall) does nice things to big groups.

It was one of my first quest and all I needed was stealth Yoshimo to find out where they were and had Jaheira cast summon fire elementals. They really kick the beholder's ar$es. Image
