I have a couple of questions about the multi-class characters.
1.What levels will I be able to reach in my classes,if I go through the game alone?
2.Will I get the high level abilities in any of my classes?
3.If a mage/thief uses the metal armor via the "use any item" ability,is he able to cast spells/use thief skills?
The Chromatic Demon has 4 different forms, each of those vulnerable only to particular type of damage. The demon regenerates by the way, at an average speed, so maybe that's why he stays at 'Uninjured'. Since one of your classes is 'mage', I suggest memorizing certain spells:
lvl 1 - all slots 'Burning Hands'
lvl 2 - several slots 'Melf's acid arrow'
lvl 3 - all slots 'Lightning Bolt'
lvl 4 - several slots 'Ice Storm' (turn off 'Gore' button otherwise loss of items is expected from the demon corpse)
lvl 5 - all slots 'Sunfire'
You may also concider carrying some wands(of fire, frost, lightning) with you, they will come in handy. When the demon is in his Ice golem form, throw all of the Fire spells on him, starting with the most damaging. The Air Elemental form is vulnerable to Acid, the Green Golem(Shambling Mound) form is vulnerable to lightning, and the Red Demon form is vulnerable to ice damage.
If you don't have the spells memorized or the items with you, retreat, the demon will not follow you out of the Watcher's Keep.
A solo fighter will have more problems with this fight, since he'll have to rely on Greater Whirlwind Attacks with particular weapon. Blackblood club(+3 acid damage) and the crossbow Firetooth(+2 fire damage) come to mind, but the best weapon there can be is Crom Faeyr(+5 lightning damage), or Gesen's Short Bow. And at least 2 Greater Whirlwind attacks.
About your classes, you'll get 2666666 xp with each class, meaning 18th Fighter lvl(base THAC0 3), 22 or 23 Thief lvl, and 17th Wizard level, meaning NO 9th lvl spells. This is the greatest drawback of the triple class combo - no Improved Alacrity. You may still cast 9th lvl spells from scrolls, but you won't get the casting reduction time from your items.
Your HLAs will probably be more than you can count, because you'll start getting them when you reach a total of 3 million xp, and will get a HLA for each level gained thereafter. Unless, however, you've installed some fixes and tweaks, you will not gain any wizard HLAs, even if you have removed the XP cap and reach 18 and higher wizard level. With the G3 fixpack, you will be able to choose the extra 6th, 7th and 8th lvl spell slot HLAs, which is not a minor gain.
Any metal armor except Elven Chain disables arcane spellcasting. So you won't be able to cast spells while wearing heavy armor. BTW, you won't be able to cast spells even in leather armor. Your best choices are:
Robe of Vecna - MR+10% and reduced casting time of 4. I'd say - the best armor and nothing else is needed.
Jan's Adventurewear - A Fighter/Thief's armor. Grants additional permanent 25% physical damage resistance. With enough Hardinesses and Defender of Easthaven+Belt of Inertial Barrier, your F/M/T will have permanent 85% physical damage resistance. While wearing Jan's Armor, your character can still cast spells.
Elven Chain isn't the best choice. Its base AC is only 5(equal to the Robe of Vecna without the other bonuses it grants), and the enchanted Elven Chains are nothing special either, since with a single Spirit Armor spell you gain a base AC of 1 and also saving throw vs spell bonus +3. Use your spells as armor and protections.
As far as I remember, in the unmodded unpatched game, a multiclass Mage can use Valygar's armor and still cast spells, yet IMHO a mage doesn't need his armor anyway.
P.S. In the fight with the Chromatic Demon, be Hasted at all times, whether with the spell Haste or with an Oil of Speed. Run away so that he cannot hit you. Use Mirror Images as additional protection. Use wands.
P.P.S. If you are wise and cunning enough, and you have avoided all of the traps earlier, you may turn those against the chromatic demon as a weapon. For instance, you can lure him in the Fire Lab and trigger 'accidentally' all of the Fire traps there....be sure to cast Protection from Fire on yourself...well, you get the idea.
