Infravision/Darkvision/Low-light vision- Do they work in CRPGs?

Heya,
I always wondered something. In Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale and Neverwinter Nights series, do super-sight abilities or spells work? Somehow? I mean, there is never a place where your character can't see at night.. or is there? There is never a mathmetical explanation (like, say, characters without low-light vision suffer -x to y and z skills), that is why I am confused.

In PnP, a special sight can be a great advantage, how about CRPGs?

In dark areas and at night enemies will light up red if you've got any sort of nightvision ability. I think the makers didn't bother with penalties/bonuses for having it since all non-human NPCs have nightvision anyway.

In Neverwinter Nights, I believe you can suffer from visual penalties. Don't ask me what they are, though...
