The model of your box? I've some knowledge, but it's rather model specific.
Basically, you need the cable between the box and your computer. Then you need software which does the transfering. Lastly, you need program and/or codex to be actually view those file with your computer. And, if you want to save them to DVDs and view with normal DVD player, you need specific programm to convert the files.
No, it's not so complicated as it sounds.

About editing the file, I can't help you, as it totally depends on what format the file comes out.
You could try to read the manual that should have come with the box. And probably there is the correct cable with it to link it to computer. Also, the manual should give correct programm for transfering the data, if such is necessary. For example, the box my parents have does require certain program so that the computer can recognize the box as external harddrive.
And for the software to actually watch the files with your computer, well again it depends on what format the files are, but I think VLC Media Player should do the trick.
Sorry that I can't be in more help, as I'm not that familiar with motorola products.

i read the book already, it had nothing in it about transfering data. (alas mostly due to them not supporting that feature

) it just tells you the many ways to set up the system to your tv/vcr ect. ect......
thanks for trying though kipi. much appreciated.

Basically all you need is a video/sound output...ok they all have that (some have 2). Then on the computer a tv tuner/capture card.
I'm using the standard red/white yellow cables (sorry forgot the name).
Play the back the recorded video and use the capture card to record it.
you can used the software that came with the card for recording and normally basic editing or get some other. There are other ways but they are all about the same.
Hope this helps, Feel free to pm me if you like.
