Help with understanding damage and attacks per round

Hey, I am trying to clarify if my character is acting like intended. My character is a level 8 Kensai with 19str(belt), 5 points in katana and 2 attacks per round. He is wielding a Katana +1.

Just now, I saw a 27 damage hit without the kensai special activated, and I am wondering how that can be. It was not a crit. As far as I can see, the max damage I could do would be 11(weapon dmg)+7(strength)+3(proficiency)+2(kensai level 8). This is a total of 23 damage. Also in addition to this, when i tried the max damage special earlier, I saw 24 damage hits.

So, why does the max damage special do 1 point more damage than my character should be capable of, and how did I make a normal hit of 27? Is it so that attacks per round as incorporated in one hit, so that the 27 was in fact two seperate hits?

Thanks in advance.

Is he using only one weapon? if so I think you are correct, the two attacks are rolled into one attack motion. but don't take my word for it.

how much does he do with the kai activated?

Twenty-four damage is correct. Your Kensai actually gets +3 to damage due to his class ability. The bonus so far has been received at level one, four and seven.

What were you fighting when you made that hit? Were you buffed? Was the other target debuffed? It's possible that the enemy has a weakness against slashing weapons.

I was not buffed, and neither was my opponent. It was the female thief trying to mug you in the slums. And finally I'm just using 1 weapon, not dual wield.

You get +4 to damage for +++++ in a weapon, not +3 (manual error).
