Ioun Stone ( SPOILER?)

I just found this thing called a "Pale Green Ioun Stone" and through trial and error, discovered you wear it like a helmet. However, when I have a character equip it, it does damage (red shows up in character portrait)
I carefully checked the threads (wanted to avoid spoilers) but could not find any thing about them causing damage when equipped. Is this normal or are they cursed or am I doing something the wrong way?
Thanks again.

This is normal. The Pale Green Ioun Stone gives you a bonus to maximum health so while it does increase, your current health does not, which can be remedied by simply resting. None of the ioun stones in the game are cursed.
The red line just says "with the addition of the bonus hitpoints, this is the difference between what you have now and what you can have".

Thanks. That really helps. Does it have a life span, or is it good for as long as you wear it?
And if you get rid of the character, can you give it to another NPC?

the "Pale green" stone when equipt on your character, actually adds hit points to your max amount possible, but it does not bring up your current hit point balance to go along with the extra hit points given, thats why you see the red, it doesnt mean you were damaged you were just given extra hitpoints. if you decide to keep it on (i used that stone for awhile in the game) after you equip it, heal yourself by spell or potion.
there are other colored stones in the game too that do different things, for example, one stone does regeneration.
hope this helps, if not, let me know.
edit: lol, i was a bit late on that one, should have refreshed my screen

BUT... no it does not have a life span, yes you can use it the entire game, and yes, you can equip onto another character in your party (as long as they can wear helmets)

It does not add "critical protection" to the head, as helmets supposedly do. Mind, I have no idea if critical protection of that sort was ever added to the game, or if it became part of the unimplemented flavor.

If helms do protect against critical hits, it's hard wired into the game, and not implemented by the item. Which, as Ioun stones are classified as helmets, would leave one to suspect they are just as protective in that sense as any other helm.
As to Mages, thieves and Mage/thieves not being able to wear them, that's just bad implementation by Bioware, they should be able to wear them., but unless one has access to IEE, then we have to live with it.

Thanks everyone. I gave the stone to Aerie. It increased her HP's by 6.
sparky_kat, thanks for the link, but I don't look at the walkthroughs here or anywhere else. I'm new to computer games (started playing after I retired) and the 1st game I played I used a walkthrough that my grandson had and it ruined the game.
I just bug you guys when I'm stuck or need info. and check the threads. I get really tempted sometimes, but I got through BG1 with everyones help and had a really good time.
Again thanks for all your help

The G3 Tweak Pack includes an optional module that allows everyone in your party to use ioun stones.

i understand how some walkthroughs can ruin a game, but the walkthroughs here on GB are VERY useful and you can go to the specific area you are in without getting future parts ruined for you. the walkthroughs can also have some helpful hints on what is suggested for good and evil sided parties too.
most of us here dont mind helping out at all, its just second nature to mention the walkthroughs
have fun playing!

It does ruin it in the sense that you'll know how far along in the game/story you are. I'm the kind of person who likes to be completely immersed into the story, so that I can get as close as I can to feeling as though I'm experiencing what my character is experiencing. And that is kind of difficult if you find out beforehand that your story is going to end in the next room.
Don't get me wrong, the gamebanshee walkthroughs have a great layout, and are very helpful, especially with those maps, but unless I feel like I'm going to miss something very important, or would like to confirm whether the game's bugged or I've just missed something, then I tend to stay away from all walkthroughs, at least during my first playthroughs.

Thanks very much.
I want everyone to understand I meant no offence to anyone in regards to my comments about walkthroughs and I fully appreciate all your help.
It's just that when I played my first game (Wizardry Gold) and used the walkthrough, when I was done, it felt like all I did was walk in someone else's footsteps. I knew everything that was going to happen before it happened.
After I finish this game, I plan to play BG1 a 2nd time, and then I will check out all the things that GB has to offer. Both of these games are a tremendous amount of fun, and I'm sure the walkthroughs will add even more to the game.
Thanks again and have a great day.
