Am I better off installing something like Improved Anvil, or going for Ascension/ Tactics/ Item Upgrade (insert mods here)?

TIA

Ascension, Tactics, Solaufein and Improved Item becomes a great runthrough if you're looking for a new, fun challenge. Some of the weapons are a bit cheesy though (Shanchuudoku, Tsuki Ken, Bloodbane, Water's Edge, Soul Reaver +6 etc), so avoid them if you're looking for a real challenge. (:

What mod you want depends on what you're looking for, and your post isn't really telling me that though. :)

IMO sola is overpowered, he is a fighter/mage multiclass 16/16 when you get him and is recieving a few special abilitys

along with his magicresi AND the sword he will get later on, i think he is waayyyys to strong, similar to valen

i for myself enjoyed the sarileth mod if you want to play with a new NPC

also i really liked the devine remix mod since they "fix" a few issues with the mage and priest

I've been reading some great stuff about Sword Coast Strategems. I think I'll give that one a try in the future.

You could try a party of 6 selfcreated PC's. Two tripleclasses and 4 multiclasses. That should slow the levelling down a bit perhaps.
Something like
FMC
FMT
CM
CT
FD
MT

4 mages, 3 thieves, 3 clerics, 3 fighters and 1 druid!

I think 6 multiclassers would make the game extremely easy.

If you haven't already, try a minimum stats game. Play as a fallen class perhaps.

Perhaps towards the end but it will atleast make SoA a little harder I believe.

Well yeah, but with the mod comes 4 of the funniest and most challenging battles I've ever fought. Definately suits the "great challenge" category. ;)

And the hardest battle that I ever fought was easily the divine epic encounter of Improved Anvil. After that Mel is only dessert. That was in version 4.2 where Ascension could (and was) installed. The battle in IA5 (incompatible with Ascension) is harder (according to others), but I haven't made it there yet.

I think that staged XP caps (mod available) make for a harder game than playing a bunch of multiclassers. The game will become very easy, at least by the time the characters gain level 6 spells.
