The dreams you have occur on three occasions:

SPOILER (highlight to read):
Spoiler
1.) After you pay Bhodi or Galean. Those dreams are of Imoen and Irenicus talking of your power.

2.) After you finish the Asylum, the first time you rest, you get a dream that grants you the Slayer Change ability, which in my opinion is pretty weak, so it's more of a novelty rather than something useful.

3.) After you leave Underdark and surface again, you get visions of Queen Ellesime asking for your help and showing you the images of Suldanessalar as well as the Tree of Life.

Well, none of the dreams are really important. I think that in spite of what I said, they start appearing when the contacts find you and tell you that they have a better offer now.

The dreams aren't really important, except for the story, and even then, you can live without them. It is possible to skip the dreams by simply not resting.
