Hiya,
I'm thinking I need a RPG "fix" to hold me over until NWN and Icewind Dale 2... Someone mentioned Wizardry 8 to me but although I have read reviews, I'm still not sure. I never played the previous ones and I'm not so sure about the first person perspective.
For those who have played it, I'd like to hear your toughts. Is it a worhwhile buy or should I look into some other game?
Thanks.

It's a very good game, but it's more like Might & Magic in its 3D, first-person look-and-feel than the standard Infinity engine product. You create a team of six characters, so there's little interaction among them (except that you can give them voices and personalities, which are rather repetitive); but you can add up to two NPCs to your party, each of whom have some attractive dialog over time.
There are fewer quests, and the game is very non-linear. It's also a lot of fun. Basically, if you want to stay with BG2-like games, consider Planescape: Torment, easily as good (though different); and Arcanum is very fine. But Wizardry 8 is very good as well.

I've only played the demo for a few minutes, but that's the game's own fault.
After 5 minutes this is what I thought:
"Hmm, this is like M&M6/7, which I forgot about once BG came out"
The combat's identical to Might and Magic 6 and up and the demo didn't give me anything to show why it's better. M&M's spell interface was much more intuitive. It kind of helps that the demo starts you out in a fight, 'thanks for letting me get used to a game before throwing me in a combat situation'.
I'm sure the game is as good as people say it is, but I just won't buy a game when it's demo (which is supposed to teach you the game) throws you in head first.

@Fable: Well, since I've already went through Arcanum a few times and P:T more than I can remember (It being my favorite RPG) I thought I'd go for something a bit different. Thanks for the advice, I went ahead and tried the demo and liked it a lot. Got me to buy the game
@Quark: Too bad the demo didn't do it for you. Like I said, I liked it enough to buy the game. And so far, it's a blast. You're right that the demo kind of trusts you into the thick of things, but I never go through tutorials anyway so...

Yep I bought this game last week and I've barely left my PC since. I'd never heard of it 'till I read a (good) review about it in a games mag so I decided to take a chance and I'm sooo glad I did.
The overall atmosphere and freedom that Wiz8 gives you is really great. Better than any other RPG I've played I'd say, even the BG series
Which I still love of course.
Some people will find this game very difficult to begin with (damn Juggernauts
) . The learning curve is pretty steep but it is so worth taking the time to play. I wish there were a forum for it here. The best forums for this game that I've seen so far are at www.ironworksforum.com and www.rpgvault.net
Acually they're the only ones I've seen so far
BTW Fable, there's a guy by the same name as you at Ironworks, is it you or an imposter?

It's me.
Since I'm moderating here, I feel I need to keep my player-based comments to a minimum--other members of our forums may not understand it, or take it wrong. It's also a very graphics-intensive board, which means that for many folks it's tough to run.
