A few questions

I have 2 questions that I would like some advice on.

1.) Would Nalia be fine to take along as my only thief? I wanted to have an extra mage and most people say that you don't need a pure thief.

2.) Occasionally when I try to equip a magic ring/amulet/cloak I get a notice saying that I can't equip it due to other magical equipment I am currently wearing. Is there some rule for this?

Thanks for the help

1) Nalia is the worst thief in the game. The only way to make her viable is by editing her in ShadowKeeper or by installing a NPC kitpack that gives her an Aventurer kit. Otherwise, you're stuck with a thief who won't find all traps, nor can open all locks. Imoen is far superior and the fact she levels as a Mage slightly slower is irrelevant. She's also more connected to the story. Jan Jansen is superior to both of them (IMO).

2) A suit of armour that says +x (+1, +2, etc) cannot be combined with an item of protection +x (ring, cloack, amulet).

There is in this game due to Bioware apparently misunderstanding AD&D rules. In the BG games you can only equip one protective item that boost Armour Class and/or Saving throws (there are a few exceptions such as the Ring of Earth). So you can't combine magic armour, Cloaks of Protection and/or rings of protection. You should only have been barred from wearing cloaks or rings of protection with magic armour, you should be able to wear cloaks and rings together, but Bioware screwed up.

As for your first question, I suggest you search the forum as the question's been asked and answered several times.

I've never used Nalia, but I've heard around here that her theiving ability percents, although low, are sufficient for many of the traps and locks encountered in the game (sufficient for most when potions and other percent-raising items are used).

Quote from the 2nd Edition DMG:
Ring of Protection: A ring of protection improves the wearer's Armor Class value and saving throws versus all forms of attack. A ring +1 betters AC by 1 (say, from 10 to 9) and gives a bonus of +1 on saving throw die rolls. The magical properties of a ring of protection are cumulative with all other magical items of protection except as follows:

1. The ring does not improve Armor Class if magical armor is worn, although it does add to saving throw die rolls.

2. Multiple rings of protection operating on the same person, or in the same area, do not combine protection. Only one such ring—the strongest—functions, so a pair of protection rings +2 provides only +2 protection.
Under Cloak of protection it says the following:
This device can be combined with other items or worn with leather armor. It cannot function in conjunction with any sort of magical armor, normal armor not made of leather, or with a shield of any sort.

All locks can be opened with the knock spell and all disarmable traps can be survived without disarming them. So you don't need a thief at all.
Nalia is sufficient as only thief. Her stats should allow her to handle most traps and locks directly, if you find the right equipment for her to wear she can handle all of them, until then you can use potions.

If you just keep her because you want an additional backup mage consider taking Jan instead, the other thieving skills like backstabbing or trapsetting can make the game far easier.
