Pool of Radiance I - Weapon/Armor Help

Okay,
I've had this game for ages and I've been trying to figure this one out. How come during the game if you try to switch between some magic weapons or armor you get slapped with 15 points of magic damage? Is there any way to get by this? I'd appreciate some help with this one. Thanks!
