Hello,
I'm playing through the OC campaign a second time with a different character build and interaction with NPCs just to see how it all goes. I've reached Level 13, and Grobnar is Level 13 with 2 Level 5 spells, but they are always greyed out and I can't cast them even immediately after resting. Anybody else experience this or have a fix?
I do not use the console or any cheats or 3rd party modules - just installed all of the official patches (through 1.12) and MoTB, also fully patched. I have not modified Grobnar's behavior from the default settings, and choose default options at all level ups.
I didn't use Grobnar much the first time through (patch level 1.11, and no MoTB installed), so I didn't really notice if he had this problem back then.
I'm running on WXP, also fully patched, and generally have few problems with the game except for a few crashes.
Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks!
Grobnar can't recover L5 spells
Which two spells does he have? Also, where are the spells greyed out? On the quickbar, on the quickcast menu, or in his spell book?
Also, because bards rely on charisma, if he has any spell or item that lowers charisma, it will affect his ability to cast higher-level spells.
For example, some items give a bonus to strength, but are so hideous that they lower charisma.

His Charisma is 19 after the default assignment of points at level up. I tried stripping him of all equipment, although nothing is lowering his Charisma anyway. I have tried numerous spells by reloading from a save just before the 13th level up - they all act the same way. They are greyed out in the Quickcast menu but not in the Spellbook (whatever that would mean). They remain greyed out after resting, and I know of no way to cast the spells (dragging them from the book to the Quick Bar doesn't work any better).
Thanks for replying!
*SPOILER IN LAST STATEMENT*
The QuickCast menu should show the spells that you are able to cast, the spellbook is for assigning which spells he will learn after resting. It's just to save time trying to find spaces on your hotbar for everything. With his level of charisma he should be able to cast 5th level spells. You're a smart person, so I'm assuming that you have moved the available spells on the left of the book to the slots on the right, and so he should be able to cast those spells.
(Side note: if you started this game before you patched, I don't THINK that it will apply to this game; I'm not completely sure though.)
If it's not an item or debuff, it's not an in-game problem, and I don't have enough know-how to go poking about in the folders. Hopefully the gods of gaming will shine on your thread and lead a programmer to you.
Completely random comment: Do you really need Grobnar anyway? Bards have the least playability of all the classes in NWN2 because every other class can do everything else better than them; and with all of the party slots, you can fill all of those roles. You just need him for *SPOILER* golem building really.

Even worse, it's on PC Bard in MoTB...
Hi Lleliwyn,
Thanks for the reply. Ah'm, his "Book", accessed through the "B" key, does not have a left and right, but only one page as I would expect for a Bard's set of spells. He should be able to cast all the spells listed in the Book. What you are describing is how the spell book works for a Wizard or Cleric, not for Bards, Paladins, or Rangers.
I fully patched both games (NwN2 and MoTB) before I started this particular campaign.
As I mentioned, this time through I'm playing a different strategy and while I realize Grobnar's not necessary or even all that useful, I am playing with less than optimal characters in my party just to see how the game plays and to hear different dialogues.
As an experiment, I started a new MoTB campaign and created a new main character as close to Grobnar as possible (the NPC seems to have two extra ability points over what I get as a Rock Gnome Bard character, so my character has two less points in Dexterity). I then manually levelled him up to level 13, choosing default spells and feats and Grobnar's skill set at each level up. The default choices all matched what Grobnar has when you first encounter him. To my surprise, after resting my PC after levelling him to level 13 and choosing two default Level 5 spells, I cannot cast those spells either! They remain greyed out in both the Quickcast menu and the Quickbar even after resting.
Might this be an official bug in MoTB? There is no mention of such on the Obsidian website.

As said in your other thread, this is not a bug but according to DnD rules. Grobnar just has no 5th level spells available, even if he knows 2 of them. He needs at least a charisma of 20 on bard level 13 to get a 5th level bonus spell.
Thanks - the problem is resolved...
Thanks for the reply. I missed that connection as I don't know the general DnD 3.x rules, I only go with what's in the game, and it didn't make sense to me that Grobnar could choose spells he couldn't cast, but it all makes sense to me now.
Bye
