What kind of thac0 penalty do you receive when firing ranged weapons are creatures engaging you in melee combat, if any?

I believe it is a steep -8 penalty.

Usually you don't get a penalty at all. It's only applied when you are so close that you could stand on each other's toes. Enemies don't come that close, only close enough that they can reach you with their weapon.
It shouldn't be a problem to test how it works if you enable the to hit roll display.

While true, I think it's prudent to point out that the baddies receive a bonus to hit YOU when you're holding a missile weapon and they're attacking you.

A to hit bonus for the baddies was only in BG2, not in BG IIRC.
