After installing Bethesda Softworks'
official Wizard's Tower plug-in, a
Deed to Frostcrag Spire will be delivered to you claiming that you've inherited a property called Frostcrag Spire from a long-lost relative (this deed is delivered immediately if you've loaded a game in progress or just as you enter the Imperial City Sewers if you've started a new game). You'll also receive the
Frostcrag Spire Key needed to gain entrance to your new acquisition.
Frostcrag Spire resides directly east of Bruma and should automatically make an appearance on your map. Fast-travel to the tower and make your way up two flights of stone steps to the large door leading inside. At first appearance, the tower looks somewhat empty, save for a book called the Frostcrag Spire Memoirs resting upon what appears to be a Frost Atronach's hand protruding from the creature's icy prison below. Reading the tome will prompt a new journal entry revealing that you can purchase "everything needed to restore the place to its former glory" from Aurelinwae at the Mystic Emporium in the Imperial City Market district. We'll get to Aurelinwae further in this walkthrough, so don't worry about tracking her down just yet. When you've closed the tome, the circular platforms around you will activate and the north wall will slide open revealing the interior of the tower's main level.
The main level contains several points of interest, including a portal leading to the tower's vault, a portal leading to the tower's living area, an Altar of Enchanting, an Altar of Spellmaking, and an Atronach Altar. The Altar of Enchanting and Altar of Spellmaking both require have a one-time requirement of
Magetallow Candles to use them and the Atronach Altar requires three
Fire Salts,
Frost Salts, or
Void Salts each time you want to summon the appropriate Atronach (Flame, Frost, or Storm, respectively). This Atronach becomes your familiar and is therefore under your command (though you can only use simple commands like Follow, Wait, or Dismiss). A useful device if you have a stockpile of salts.
The living area is where you'll find a handy garden fully stocked with all of your alchemical reagent needs, as well as a portal leading to Frostcrag Spire - a platform at the very peak of the majestic tower. Additionally, a door along the north wall leads out to another small platform where you'll discover portals leading to every Mages Guild in Cyrodiil and the Imperial City Arcane University.
The Frostcrag Spire vault is curiously empty, but fortunately you can change that. Fast-travel to the Imperial City Market district and pay a visit to the Mystic Emporium during normal business hours. When you speak to Aurelinwae and proceed to make a purchase from her, you'll find that she sells four books of interest (
Frostcrag Alchemy Lab,
Frostcrag Bedroom Area,
Frostcrag Library Area, and
Frostcrag Vault Area) and the two
Magetallow Candles Boxes needed to fire up the altars. These items will set you back thousands of gold, so they may be out of your price range if your character is new to the game. You'll want to pick up as many of the books as you can afford, though the candles are only necessary if you want the convenience of using two of the tower's three altars.
Each book you purchase will prompt the delivery of that particular section to the tower. The library addition adds several bookshelves stocked with a vast assortment of the game's books, including some very rare tomes that you'll find useful in your travels. The vault addition places a large number of chests, barrels, and creates in the vault area for your storage needs. It also adds a wine rack stocked with a respectable collection of wine, including some rare varieties that you'll find useful for some of the game's quests. In a remote section of the vault, you'll also find the tombstones of Rindsey (acclaimed archer and celebrated aficionado of Tamrielic ales) and Lennasaan (renown master of writing and storytelling supreme). Using Rindsey's tombstone will grant you a bottle of his famous Daedric Lava Whiskey, while using Lennasaan's tombstone will imbue you with an 800-second blessing that confers a bonus to your Personality attribute and Speechcraft and Mercantile skills. The alchemy addition provides everything you need to make use of the garden's reagents and even produces a jewelry box in the living area that already contains a
Pentamagic Loop ring for your personal use. Finally, the bedroom addition places a bed and personal chest in the living area for a little bit of extra storage and rest when you need it.
Any way you look at it, Frostcrag Spire is a very useful stronghold for all characters. In fact, it's practically a necessity for those characters that dabble in the arcane arts or alchemy. Where else are you going to find so many reagents in one spot?
