When you tell Arquen that you're ready to invoke the awakening ritual at the end of the Following a Lead quest, you'll be whisked away to Bravil's Lucky Old Lady. Arquen will explain that the crypt to the Night Mother herself resides within the statue and that invoking an ancient ritual will reveal the entrance.

At this point, you cannot move and simply have to watch the other members of the Black Hand complete the ritual. The statue will twist and contort, after which a trap door will appear underneath it. Arquen asks you to follow them down into the crypt, so kiss the Lucky Old Lady for her blessing and head down into the tomb.

The Night Mother isn't very happy with being disturbed, nor is she very happy with the fact that the Black Hand remains tainted with a traitor. Before she can identify which member is the deceiver, Mathieu Bellamont will attack and kill two of the Black Hand members - Banus Alor and Belisarius Arius. Arquen will yell out to protect the Night Mother, and you'll be forced to fight Mathieu with her help. When the traitorous assassin falls, the Night Mother will approach you.

Now that the Dark Brotherhood's crisis is over, the Night Mother will tell you that she has been following your journey, including your ability to single-handedly destroy half of the Black Hand. She apparently knew about Mathieu's intentions when he was just a boy, but refused to stop him from his destructive course because it was only due to her servants' own incompetence. Based on everything that you have done for the Dark Brotherhood, including the slaying of the traitor, the Night Mother appoints you to be her new Listener.

As the Listener, the Night Mother offers to deliver you to the Cheydinhal Sanctuary, where you can reside with Arquen as your humble servant and guide. She also invites you to search the three large chests in the crypt and obtain any treasures that they contain (quite a few magic items are yours for the taking). You may also want to loot the corpses of the three dead Black Hand members for their Black Hand Robes and Black Hand Hoods, as well as some gold. The slab in the corner is surrounded by several hard-to-find ingredients, so grab those while you're here too.

When you've finished looting the crypt, speak to the Night Mother and tell her that you're ready to leave for the Cheydinhal Sanctuary. Before teleporting you to the sanctuary, the Night Mother will present you with a "special gift" by enhancing the Blade of Woe you received from Lucien Lachance so long ago. Previously, the blade did not possess any enchantments, but now it has the ability to demoralize your opponents and damage health, magicka, and willpower.

Once you arrive at the Cheydinhal Sanctuary, speak to Arquen to complete the quest. She will tell you that she will begin recruiting new members for the Dark Brotherhood and that you must visit the statue in Bravil once a week to receive a list of names and locations. This will trigger the Whispers of Death quest.
