Nirnroot is a rare but ubiquitous herb that can be found anywhere in Cyrodiil, usually growing alongside water. It's a particularly vivid green, with spiky leaves. It can also occasionally be found in caves or as a pot-plant. (The Arch-Mage has one in his bedroom, which you can take when you replace him, or steal earlier, if you dare). After finding your first root, any alchemist (found in most cities) will suggest that you talk to Sinderion. You will find him in the basement of the Weald Inn in Skingrad (door on the right, after you enter).

Sinderion will tell you he's working on a potion called the Elixir of Exploration and he needs 10 more roots to complete it. He will mark a likely spot on your map - Shadeleaf Copse in the Great Forest. You can go and get a couple from there, but it's probably more profitable at this stage to take a tour up the various rivers on the map, so that you can locate any Caves, Mines, Forts or Elven ruins for later investigation.

When you've got 10 Nirnroots, take them to Sinderion and he'll tell you he'll give you a free potion in 24 hours. But he needs another 20 to upgrade it. You can guess the rest. He wants another 30 for the next batch for the Strong Elixir of Exploration, and a further 40 for the final batch - the Grand Elixir of Exploration. After that, he'll just pay you for every 10 roots you bring him.

Meanwhile you get each potion for free, and can buy more from him at a modest price. The latter two are worth carrying around. The strong version lasts for five minutes and gives you: fortify health points by 20, fatigue by 20, and total night vision, plus 5 points on fortify blade, blunt instrument, destruction, restoration and sneak. The Grand version doubles the points on the latter five. That can be quite useful if you get yourself into a desperate situation.
