This quest does not appear in your journal and requires installing the last-known of the official plug-ins "The Fighter's Stronghold". It is not on the Knights of the Nine disk, or, apparently, on any other current commercially-available disk.
Under it you inherit a massive castle. A previous owner, Lord Varla (father of Lord Kelvyn, whom you helped in battle, before he was killed) left his journal concealed in a pillar in his private quarters. Find this and you will learn that he locked the wicked Lich, Arielle Jurard, and the corpse of his son in a grotto deep in the cellars of the castle. The entrance is through the Training Room.
Here you need to find a movable bracket on a candle-holder attached to the wall behind the archery butt. Follow your nose down the passage, through another movable pillar, and you will find the skeletons of Lord Kain and the Lich. On the way you have to kill quite a few monsters, mainly Ghosts and Liches. Save frequently. Kain has the
Dragonsword of Lainlyn and
Lord Kain's Shield on his corpse, while the Lich has the key to a treasure chest hidden under water near the southwest wall. The
Varla Stones are around the top level of the chamber.
