Quest: Go for the Throat

Did we miss anything in this section? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

Background

This is the second Ebon Claws quest. You'll receive it from Altama after completing the quest Rooting out a Renegade.

Walkthrough

This quest will give you "an opportunity to tear at the beating heart of the Night Masks." Altama will tell you that a noble named Foriat Rumbolt has been collecting protection money for the Night Masks, and that his current month's tribute is still in his mansion in the Arena District. Altama will then ask you to steal this money away from him, and also to look for a list of his customers, which the Ebon Claws might be able to use.

You'll find Rumbolt's mansion on the western side of the Arena District (#1). It will be protected by high walls and a big gate. To get inside, you'll need to talk to the gate guard out front. No amount of bribery will convince him to let you pass, but during your conversation with him, he'll let slip that he also works as a guard for the Morningstar Haven (#2), and that he usually sleeps through his shift there. So to get the key to the gate, you'll need to follow the guard the Morningstar Haven and then rob him, kill him, or threaten him.

Back at Rumbolt's mansion, the gate key will get you onto the grounds, but to actually get inside the mansion you'll have three choices: the front door, the back door, or some ornamental rocks plus a tree. If you enter the mansion through the front door, then you'll have to do some fighting, but acquiring the quest items will be easy. If you choose the back door or the tree, then you'll be able to sneak into the mansion, but you might have to jump through some hoops to get what you need.

Direct Approach

If you enter the mansion through the front door, then Lord Rumbolt and his Night Mask guests will probably detect your entry and attack you. After the battle, you'll find a key on Rumbolt's corpse, which will allow you to open the safe upstairs (#6). Inside the safe, you'll find Rumbolt's Magic Bag, one of your two objectives for the quest. You'll find the other objective, the Sheet of Names, in one of the piles of books in the study (#4).

When you exit the mansion, you'll gain influence with Mantides and Charissa, but you'll lose influence with Rinara.

Stealthy Approach

For this approach, you'll need to enter the mansion through the back door or by climbing the tree. The tree will require you to pass a dexterity check, but if you fall then you'll be able to keep on trying until you succeed. Inside the mansion, if you start out on the lower floor, then you'll need to climb up the staircase (Exit A) and then either bluff or intimidate the butler Mister Quink (#3) when you run into him. If you succeed in this, then Quink will let you pass. Otherwise, he'll yell for help, and you'll have to attack Lord Rumbolt and his Night Mask guests (and essentially switch to the direct approach).

You'll find Lord Rumbolt's safe in his bedroom (#6), which is also where you'll start out if you enter the mansion through the window (Exit B). The safe will be locked, and the nearby cat (#5) won't be happy if you start fiddling with it. If you're playing a ranger or a druid, then you'll be able to communicate with the cat and get the safe combination from it. Otherwise, you'll have to pick the lock on the safe with your character (Rinara won't be allowed to try it), which will cause the cat to flee to the staircase (Exit A). If you're not able to open the safe, then you'll have to go downstairs and kill Lord Rumbolt to get the key. Inside the safe you'll find Rumbolt's Magic Bag, one of your two objectives for the quest. You'll find the other objective, the Sheet of Names, in one of the piles of books in the study (#4).

To escape from the mansion, the easiest way is to just go through the window (Exit B). If you decide to use the staircase (Exit A), then you might have to deal with the cat. If you open the door to the ground floor while the cat is on the staircase, then it will run to Lord Rumbolt and alert him to your presence, which will force you to attack him and his Night Mask guests. The only way to avoid this is to kill the cat.

When you exit the mansion, if you managed to keep yourself stealthy, then you'll witness a cut scene where Lord Rumbolt will discover the theft of his magic bag, and the Night Masks will kill him for losing it. Then outside, you'll gain influence with Rinara, but you'll lose influence with Mantides and Charissa.

Back at Sods and Sundries

When you return to Sods and Sundries (in the Harbor Loop) after completing your assignment, Altama will reward you with an Ebon Blade and 2000 xp. If you picked up the Sheet of Names along with Rumbolt's Magic Bag, then Altama add an additional 500 gp to the reward. Finally, Altama will give you your next quest for the Ebon Claws: Golden Statue of Lathander.
