Speaking of the interface, it was clean and easy to use. Instead of huge battles, Warcraft III opts for smaller skirmishes and places the game's emphasis on the tactics of "heroes" -- individual units with special abilities. Heroes will gain levels with experience and can carry around different magic items. The interface is dictated by the game; you can always see your heroes' icons at the top of the screen, one click away at any time. They're clearly visible on the map and blink if they're in danger. Using items or special abilities is easily accomplished by prominent buttons next to the hero's portrait. Producer John Lagrave summed up the interface philosophy: "It's simple to use, with as much info as you need, but we don't want to burden the player."
