A Trip Back Through Leveling Up

The Witcher's character leveling system also uses an ability leveling system like Bloodlines'. This ability leveling system has three tiers: bronze, silver and gold. Early levels grant you bronze tokens, meaning you cannot 'pump' particular skills to become, for example a veteran sword-fighter early on. How many points you put into sword levels affects how many consecutive swings you can perform without interruption, as well as how much damage you do.
There are additional benefits you can spend your ability levels on, such as more damage, more likelihood to cause the enemy to reel, and extra powers when drunk or when brawling (a mini-game) for example. Sadly, there is some illusion to this system: although there are a lot of choices, it doesn't feel like many of them affect combat significantly beyond damage adjustments.
