The lackluster commercial and critical success of The Matrix Online likely contributed to the sale. "Our goal is to deliver quality content and consistently advance our key properties within the online games space," said Jason Hall, senior vice president of WBIE. "We've done just that with The Matrix Online."
Monolith is no longer officially involved in developing The Matrix Online, and over two dozen employees were let go as a result. SOE isn't leaving the team members in the cold, however. Instead, SOE has extended job offers to 25 members of the development staff, and many have already accepted. The former Monolith employees will soon be working out of SOE's Seattle office, only two miles down the road.
