I contacted ArenaNet's Michael Gills, the chap who is responsible for organising their tournaments and so on, and talked to him about the situation Guild Wars now finds itself in. It is, of all the MMOs, the one with best chance of become an e-sport that encompasses Western tastes. I first asked him whether Guild Wars really was intended to be an e-sport?
"That was part of the initial design of the game. When the game was first being discussed and developed, a choice was made to base it more on the basic mechanics and techniques of Magic the Gathering, a game of skill, instead of Dungeons and Dragons, a game based on the amount of time you put into it."
"Most MMORPGs use the Dungeons and Dragons model where the more you play, the more powerful you are. The initial Guild Wars team wanted to create a game that allowed players to sharpen and show off their skills, regardless of how much time they put into the game."
"Supporting this game with a full assortment of organized play was also discussed in the beginning. E-sports were already under way (mostly FPS style games), and ArenaNet definitely wanted to broaden the category with Guild Wars."
