The proliferation of communication technology means it's real easy to work remotely and stay in touch with everyone we know, without having to share a room with them and their body odors. The downside, as demonstrated in System Shock 2, is that we no longer have any way of discerning our squishy, human friends from nutty computers determined to get us all killed. Which is pretty much the excuse I use for ignoring my text messages. "Yeah, I got your note, honey. But how was I to know that it was actually you asking me to pick up milk on the way home? That's exactly the kind of thing an insane artificial intelligence bent upon the extinction of humanity would want me to do.
