The Escapist gives it a 4/5:
If you drained every last drop of fun out of the first Puzzle Quest, you may not find enough here to evade an overwhelming feeling of deja vu, but if you never caught the bug the first time around, definitely give this a shot. Yes, it's an absurd premise. Yes, the RPG elements are very shallow. Try it anyway. Just don't be surprised when you notice the sun coming up.

Be sure to pick this up on either the DS or the 360 through Xbox Live Arcade. Personally, I prefer the DS option simply because making my selections is exponentially easier with a stylus, but if you don't have a DS, the 360 version is not to be taken lightly. And as always, on the 360 you can try it before you buy it.

In conclusion, Puzzle Quest 2 brings plenty to the table. The game succeeds at offering an innovative experience unlike anything else available, barring its prequel. While the addictive puzzle combat is the main draw, the game purposefully handles itself like a core RPG. It does not hold your hand, has tons of optional missions and content and will kick your ass if you don't learn the ropes. With many hours of campaign and optional play, a time consuming multiplayer mode, loads of customization options and dozens of enemy types, I'd recommend Puzzle Quest 2 to puzzle fans and RPG fans alike. If you by chance enjoy both of these genres, then this one's a no brainer.
Gamers With Casts doesn't do the scoring thing:
Puzzle Quest 2 does exactly what you expect it to do. It brings the same accessible, addictive gameplay as the original. It adds new depth and new options while excising some of the grind. Multiple classes and diverse character builds should help keep it fresh for multiple playthroughs.
And neither does Games Are Evil:
Despite the solid gameplay and overall fun experience I had with Puzzle Quest 2, I was left with an odd sense of disappointment. Shoddy and I mean shoddy art design plague both Puzzle Quest games to the point where it almost has to be a conscious design decision by the team to have horrendous art. Accompanying the art is a lackluster story and soundtrack that makes the original Warcraft seem like a deep and compelling narrative. These aspects don't make the game unplayable in any way, but they certainly made me wonder what could have been.
