Nope, didn't work either. But I just went back to the temple and talked to the guy at Helm and the quest went away. :)

Of course now I'm stuck on the Mae'Var Guild quest. I killed the guy that Edwin wanted me to, but when I went back to talk to him, it says he's busy and I can't get him to talk to ...

I thought you could only use the rift device once and then you have to bring it back to the Avatar. Even the journal I have says "Once the beholder is killed, I must return the rod to the Avatar..."
