You did not miss anything there. Or say, you only missed the end dialog choice.

Also, this dialog (it makes no sense to me) and all such dialogs (only a small # of them make sense) make no difference whatsoever in your game progress.

your autosave may be corrupt or you're playing MP or something nobody other than you knows (more info about your game config is needed if you want your q to be answered without too much guessign).

Listed weapon damage is not everything. This game is very well balanced: A melee fighter is supposed to do more damage on paper - that's because a ranged fighter kills mobs faster on average. In fact, a dual-wielder melee fighter does highest listed weapon damage.

At any point in your game, if the best thrown weapon you have found does 100 average damage, then roughly the best bow you get should do up to about 150 average, and the best crossbow you have found should do more than 150 average.
