I have the best solution to this problem. I have never been able to loot corpses without doing this. You should initiate combat (press C) and then loot each body individually. You should see the hand over the corpse in combat mode.

I think it worked for me after installing the CO8 patch. It is used in the inventory slot. However, if you use it as a weapon, make sure you pick it up after you toss it. I lost mine somewhere.
