Ba/RDD/BG/FB
Let your party hang back and toss some fire aoe spells (you are immune thanks to RDD)...
taking the (special) falcion with impr. crit will do for normal encounters (2 cleave hits from FB are nice as is thoughness feat, by the way^^)
The Epic Divine Might is just for kicks in boss ...

After finddling about a good build for the X-Pack, I came to some very similar builds:
Jack-o-Trades (Drow)
the afore mentioned Bard/RDD/BG/FB, which will never come to a BAB of 26
- I like this build more than the 2nd choice (that follows), but would distribute lvl's differently -> Bard14/RDD10 ...

playability was the reason for Aasimar over Drow^^
I took Drow for a lot of builds... it's nice(in theorie), but ECL is not :-)
The Build is meant to take a big 2h weapon @start (taking Pwr Attack and Cleave early on) and than make the transition to 2 weapons when BAB (penalty) and TWF feats are ...

Hypothetical approach:
Race: Drow (yes I know...)
Class(es): Sorcerer 6/ Eldritch Knight 10 / Black Guard 4)
I always want to do each and everything by myself... Drow is used for SR (that one would never have good enough reflex saves)
This is one mean bastard :mischief:
Practical (in use character ...

when taking Sorcerer...
always (if possible) take spells that scale openly with lvl;
e.g. Fireball seems quite handy, but caps at 10th lvl (10d6) Skulltrap doesn't cap
Flame Arrow (for single target) is another example of no cap
ADHW is good (caps late, lvl 25)
just take a good look at the ...

may be a little bit off topic
if you like an epic approach...
I would consider playing BGT (with some other mods, especially XP nerf)
with a DruidicSorcerer and a Swashbuckler/Cleric (multiclass... yes it's illegal, but the HLA's are worth it -> Whirlwind (as there is a lack in the tanking ...

Jan is not just a thief, but a caster too...
If Hide in Shadows doesn't cut it... cast Invisible or Impr Invi or best Mislead (ok this can be seen as Cheese :p ); if you do like that you can search for traps at the same time
LoS or Line of Sight tactics (with spells)
Jan -> invisible -> move up to ...

1. Use your Thief:
Hide in Shadows and scout ahead
-> Nuke them out of Line of sight
2. Use Sequencer Spells to
a) breach (Spell)Protections of enemies (see enemy)
b) wreck havoc (3 Sunfires come to mind) (manuel)
c) protect yourself (on helpless state)
3. Use "combined" forces (this way not all ...

With those skills as majors you will shoot through levels; enemies will lvl with you, so you may lack behind (see other threads -> Oblivion to hard??? (which it isn't))

If I remember correctly, you were heavily in rp back the days of BG and Icewind series...
Well to become what you want (rp wise) in Oblivion you need to somewhat powergame...
Breton seems to be what you want; my suggestion is to focus on Endurance and Int. first (HP and Magica Pool is not enhanced ...

To control the leveling choose skills you use on a regular basis (or can't control like atheletics) as minor's.
Furthermore take a controlable skill of any (or at least your most wanted) attributes; e.g. Illusion for Charisma, Armorer for Endurance and so on...
(this way you can "force" lvlup's ...

with this char you will have a hard time to not cheese (in the opinion of others)

project image yourself to get a support/damage caster
protect copies by using spell imunity divination
cast mislead on self ...

Traps -> (obvious but...) out of line of sight of enemies?!
Points spent on set snare?!
Thief or fighter/thief shine in the middle of the game
Thief: lvl 13 -> Backstab for 5x Damage (only assassin kit advance to 7x), after that only UAI is a big deal (my 2cents)
Figter: lvl 13 -> 2 Attacks ...
