Chest bug?

I'm in custard mansion and the last chest won't open. I'm guessing that's where the map is...grrr. Any suggestions?

This was my last save point before I beat the game. I am currently going back through the game to try to acquire more ranks other than fighter/lord.

I just applied the 1.1 patch, which is supposed to fix that problem...but it doesn't. I'm assuming that the patch should have been applied before defeating the athena chess player? Any ideas from the actual game makers?
