I sort of floundered my way through it but my son is having a heck of a time with the shadow gates on the "floating islands".
Is there a pattern to which gates you need to take to get through to the portals on each one?
Like I was taking the shadow gates that had the 3 big rocks right next to them ...

That's one of my main complaints, too. In most games like ...

You know the hallway when you first come into the ruins where you can go left or right and if you go right there's a shadow gate (and if you look down that hallway the rune glyphs on the floor are lit?) - go through that shadow gate and you're at the flaming platforms

Ok -I think it's the "flaming platforms" one I haven't gotten yet.
Any hints as to where it even is?

She's North West of Skuldoon. When you come out the south gate of Skuldoon, follow the mountains around (south and west, then back north)and you'll find her in the top of that area.

Trying to follow the new rules and keep topics together:
I'm also stumped in the Shadow ruins. I got the sword, followed the lord-what's-his-name and got the glyph that's in the room with his statue(where you place the sword). Now I'm stumped. Where do I go now to get the other 3 runes?

Talk to Staroxia in the forbidden lands and she will send you to talk to Grymlok up in the North Lands. He will give the the final moon glyph so you can use the gates to get to the Vale of Ruin
It's quite a way into the game.

One of you needs to "host" and the other needs to "join".
I do "multiplayer" then "internet" then "direct IP".
Once that screen comes up, decide who will be the host and who will join.
Either way, it will show you what your IP is.
If you're hosting, you need to tell the other person so they can put ...

Ok, I'm stumped: where do I get the password for the talking stone heads/guardians? I must have missed it somewhere.

I think it has to be at night and a full moon not covered by clouds.

I'm not sure why, but the guy at the Empyrean temple won't give me the candles for the Celestial Shrines.
Any ideas?

Also I got the quest to save the "Master" from the tiger path guy and the "master" got killed. Is that a dead quest now? The tiger path guy won't give me anything new, just said he ...

Ok: go North of Arinadale by going past the Alchemist store. Stay on the East side of the river going to Lost Lake.
On the map, there's a swampy area below the SE part of Lost Lake. He's there but you might run across a fire drake as well.
He summons undead, so good luck
