There's at least four characters you can pick up in stonebridge, not including all the packmules you can buy. There's Zed in the tavern, the Bowyer in the temple, Gyorn at the entrance and another melee fighter somewhere in the town.

I just dl'd the demo....... This game is freakin awesome from what I can see so far.....
I only got a bit past the ruined bridge... I can't seem to find the dungeon, I might be stuck, it might just be the end of the demo...

You can keep any opposing characters without any conflict so long as you maintain a neutral alignment, at 10-12 or so.
I had Edwin and Minsc throughout the whole game with no problem whatsoever.
