Hate to tell you this but that happened to me also. Now if you do not wish to join the thieves guild it is really no problem; that I know of. But if you want to get a couple of quests and join the Mystery Guild then I think you may need to restart the game. I had to restart.

When I started and first got to Fargrove and into the Custard Mansion I ran into big problems. I was fighting the big guy with the axe and the game spawned bat, rats, mummies, skeletons ~and~ snakes. What a mess, but I finally did take them all out. Hurray!

And I also like this game an awful lot.

I guess I should also mention that I saw on another web site that this class combo could be used Adept/Mage/Monk/Shugenja/Kenjasai, which is why I selected my classes above as I did. This shows that you can have two Dragon Guild classes. I wonder, Hounder, is the site am I looking at not correct?

Every game has flaws or bugs, no way around it. I am encouraged by the fact the developers want to fix things. I had one bug that forced me to start over but that seemed to have been fixed in 1.3 patch and that as made me very happy. I am having fun with this game and look forward to the next patch ...

As I understand it the Mages Guild is the Arcane guild.

Starting Tier Second Tier
Adept --->Monk

First Tier Second Tier
Fighter---->Samurai

Third Tier
Shaolei Master


I think this will work but am not sure. I know there are probably more powerful combinations out there but I think I want to try this first.
