In the battle square you see nine squares. You can summon monsters to help you, but they must stand neither in the middle square, nor outside the battlesquares or they'll disappear when the battle begins. Place them in the eight outer squares and they'll stay.

You can enable HOF difficulty in the Icewind dale configuration program which is located in a folder somewhere in the start menu. It's a checkbox.

One thing you might consider as well is, that a critical hit doesn't multiplay the added elemental damage.

I really prefer weapon+x over a weapon +elemental damage.

Mask and Ogma are not that bad, because they are the only two which get the "Executioner's eyes" spell at level 17...

Other than that, I'll stick with Lathander for:
meteor swarm + 20% damage from spirit of flame feat,
greater restoration,
raise dead,
and the Aura of Vitality, which really kicks.

A scimitar has critical range 18-20..
Keen scimitar: 17-20.
Improved critical feat: 16-20
Executioner's Eyes: 12-20..

That makes 40% chance for a critical hit.

Let's assume a barbarian with 4 attacks.

Why is heart of fury a pain?
I started iwd2 immediately in hof mode after I bought it with a all-level 1 party. You die a lot more often, so it takes longer. But you also have the fun longer.
