For my fighter builds I select NEITHER great cleave or whirlwind attack.
I'll start of with why great cleave sucks:

For a melee fighter, toughness comes to mind. Do you use a backup bow from time to time? You could take some archery feats for your CoT bonus feats every two levels, blind fight maybe too. Maybe pick up weapon focus in a one handed back up weapon in case you need to use a shield from time to time ...

I agree, for the price you can get the set of the origional game with the expansions today, its worth it. I couldn't imagine playing NwN without the expansions they really do enhance the experience. I haven't planned a character for multiplayer but I know that using your NwN OC character won't be a good idea since you developed that character based on a single player environment. Alot of planning is required for a multiplayer powergaming character.
