You can use the Slow Time spell to drastically reduce your card sorting times. I don't remember the exact number, but my record for that game is like 5 seconds.

Did you do anything special between retries?

It seems like every time I retry there's only 1 or 2 books difference in what he wants but it seems to hover around the same pattern....
