I was doing that as well for awhile, until the game bugged out on me.
I sent one of my main characters to the inn, grabbed one of the other guys from that in that I was using as a mule, gave him some more stuff, sent him back to the inn.

Im fighting Valdis and first Deru gets stuck behind one of the Eye of Zaramoths, then later my custom guy gets stuck behind another. What the heck? By stuck I mean they just stand there and will not move at all no matter what mode you are in. Now looks like I will have to reload last save which ...

I sent one of my guys to the inn to temporarily replace them to do a secondary quest. When I went to retrieve them from the inn, they weren't there (not in the list of companions at the inn). Am I bugged? Anyone else have this problem?

I just had the same problem. Did you ever figure out how to get around this?
