I would agree with that, my experience is that melee characters will eventually become strong enough that the game won't provide much of a challenge...although that may depend on your playing style as well.

I noticed today that the book Breathing Water (gives a rank in Alteration) has Seryne Relas, the Alteration master trainer, as a character. I was wondering if any or all of the other master trainers appear or are referenced in their skill books.
