Aard and stairs

I used the aard sign to temporarily blast them out of the way and ran to stairs about four steps up.
They can then only come at you one or two at a time and they are then easily beaten using strong steel style.
A swallow potion helped as well.

I am grateful for your reply but I have read the classes section in the Gamebanshee walkthrough and I am still unsure of the above questions.

New to game,started as a fighter.Now in Fargrove after sewers and theater.

Due to painful way of item identification,I would like to pick up ID skill as soon as possible (playing collector's edition).

It would seem that the only way to do this would be by joining one of the other three guilds.
